Journalist Amelia Gentleman writes about her recent trip to Jordan, saying that due to the war in neighboring Syria, Jordan is nearly empty of travelers though is quite safe. Since 2011, tourism has fallen 66% which is disheartening considering that 20% of the country’s GDP rests on tourism.
Jordan is home to the ancient city of Petra, famously featured in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and considered one of the seven wonders of the world, which the journalist said she visited undisturbed and in “near silence.” Ms. Gentleman writes, “Nothing had prepared me for how spectacular Jordan is, and perhaps part of the intense experience of visiting now is tied up with the unusually solitary feeling you have as you walk through its ancient sites.”
