With unemployment hovering at 50%, Chef Wareef Hameedo managed to eventually open his own restaurant, calling it “Soryana” or Our Syria. “Only a few places were doing non-traditional things,” says Hameedo. “When it came to Syrian-oriented food, I thought I might have a chance.”
