“We didn’t start doing the ethnic comedy and Muslim comedy until we felt our community was under siege and that we could no longer just step onstage and be treated as an equal,” says comedienne Maysoon Zayid (known for her fabulous TED Talk “I Got 99 Problems… Palsy Is Just One”).
The New York Times takes a serious look at Muslims and comedy, featuring a look at the ongoing situation between Dean Obeidallah (filmmaker of “The Muslims Are Coming”) and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority who recently refused to feature the comic’s humorous posters on subway platforms due to a sudden new policy banning political ads.
On a lighter (and more fun) note, Dean and Maysoon are co-hosting the upcoming “Muslim Funny Fest” which opens in New York on July 21st.
