Ramadan is a time where many Muslims come to study the Quran, often by listening to religious apps or online programs such as QuranExplorer.com. Religious scholar Jerusha Lamptey found one thing missing from these reciters (known as “qariah”) – women! So she launched a Twitter campaign, #AddAFemaleReciter, hoping to get popular recitation programs to add female reciters.
“This is an issue of representation and inclusion,” says Ms. Lamptey . “There’s nothing that bars females from reciting the Quran. In fact it is incumbent on all Muslims to learn it and recite it daily without distinction in gender.”
