Last week, a federal judge in Minneapolis ordered three young men accused of plotting to join ISIS be kept in detention while awaiting trail. The defense argued that the best way to insulate these young men from extremist groups was entrusting them to their families and community leaders, and the judge seemed to seriously consider this view.
“If you integrate them back into their family relationships and you have responsible faith leaders, then that’s going to be the check on them that they need,” said Representative Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat who is Muslim. “There’s going to be people watching them, encouraging them.”
