According to a recent UNICEF study, 2.6 million Syrian children have not attended school for three years or more, but despite this disheartening report, there are a few success stories and Al Salam School in Turkey is one of them.
The school is funded by private donors in America and Canada, and offers a sports program for both boys and girls, a computer lab, and mentorship for older students applying to colleges.
Hazar al-Mahayni, a pharmacist from Montreal, opened the school in 2012, citing that education was just as important in the Syrian crisis as food and shelter. “The future of Syria will come from these children,” she told NPR.
