“Islam teaches us: ‘Man is simply a steward holding whatever is on Earth in trust,’” said Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, Uganda’s grand mufti. “Therefore man should ensure that we do everything possible to protect for this and future generations in order to leave this world a better place than we found it.”
Prominent Muslim leaders and scholars came forward today at the International Islamic Climate Change Symposium in Istanbul calling for climate change reform, declaring that protecting the environment is a religious duty.
“Our species, though selected to be a caretaker or steward (khalifah) on the earth, has been the cause of such corruption and devastation on it,” per a statement released at the conference.
