As the American comic book industry has started to feature Muslim and Arab heroes/heroines so has the Muslim and Arab world, as the demand for comic books in the Middle East has exploded.
And these comic books don’t shy away from tackling difficult subjects. In “Qahera,” a veiled crusader not only battles sexism in Egypt, but also fights Islamophobia. And in “Angel of Peace,” a super-heroine combats jinn (a type of Islamic spirit) while trapped in an alternate universe of infinite war (many site Lebanon’s long civil war as a direct analogy).
This April, the annual Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) in Dubai drew 50,000 attendees headlining famous icons like William Shatner and Gillian Anderson (“The X-Files”).
