Of the four million Syrian refugees, the United States has taken in only 1,500 Syrians. By contrast, Germany has accepted 800,000 people.
“The U.S. has historically been the world leader in recognizing the moral obligation to resettle refugees,” says David Millibrand, CEO of International Rescue Committee.
“But in the four years of the Syria crisis, there has been inertia rather than leadership.”
However change is, hopefully, in the air. A recent online petition requesting the U.S. government to accept more Syrian refugees has so far gathered more than 54,000 signatures.
