In this Latino USA podcast, the intersection of Muslim and Latino identities is explored. The show talks to three people of Latino heritage who converted to Islam at various points in their lives.
Raised a Catholic, Hazel Gomez converted to Islam as an adult, and is currently a community organizer with a focus on immigration and criminal justice reform. Hamza Perez is a former gang member who found Islam “on the street” and “tasted happiness” for the first time. In 2010, he was ranked as one of the top 500 most influential Muslims in the world and is the subject of the award-winning film “New Muslim Cool.” And finally, Wilfredo Amr Ruiz is an attorney for the Civil Rights Counsel for the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR Florida), a political analyst, and a Muslim chaplain.
A fascinating and thought-provoking listen!
