As security deteriorates in Afghanistan, and women’s rights and welfare are threatened, a group of university students gathered last week to embark on an encouraging course –Afghanistan’s first graduate degree in gender and women’s studies.
“There’s been a lot of change for women, but it’s not enough,” said Zheela Rafhat, one of the students enrolled on the two-year course that will tackle difficult subjects like gender and violence. Eighteen women and ten men have enrolled in the program.
According to reports, in the last fourteen years, millions of female students have gone back to school but access to higher education has been greatly limited. The new graduate program hopes to spread awareness and equality.
