In the aftermath of the San Bernardino attacks, Muslim-American women are increasingly worried about their own safety, especially those that wear the hijab.
Tina Aoun is the director of UC Riverside’s Middle Eastern Student Center, and says that many of her female students are deliberating if they should take off their headscarf or try to conceal it. The director says that though she cannot give religious advise, she does tell her students to travel in pairs and carry mace. Campus police have also increased patrols between campus and a nearby mosque.
“It’s so hard, because we need to mourn the people killed in San Bernardino, but we have to also worry about our own safety,” says student Rafika Alami. “That’s the sad reality of it.”
