Last month college professor Larycia Hawkins wrote on her facebook page that Christians and Muslims “worship the same God.” While many saw this as a non-controversial statement of support from a Christian person, her university took issue. Ms. Hawkins is a tenured political science professor at Wheaton College in Illinois which is known as the “evangelical Harvard.” The school has put Ms. Hawkins on administrative leave, and are said to be in the process of termination.
Ms Hawkins further elaborated on her facebook page, “I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book.”
The Washington Post makes the point, “the theological debate [centers] on how evangelicals teach about a Trinitarian God, meaning that they believe in a three-person God — God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit — existing as one being. Muslims do not believe in the Trinity.”
In a news conference, Ms. Hawkins stood firm with her convictions declaring: “Wheaton College cannot scare me into walking away from the truth (that) all humans — Muslims, the vulnerable, the oppressed of any ilk ¬– are all my sisters and brothers, and I am called by Jesus to walk with them.”
