Entertainment Weekly interviews Sana Amanat, Marvel’s Director of Content and Character Development, and the editor of Ms. Marvel. Ms. Amanat says that inclusion and “flipping the paradigm” were clear mandates for the development of the series with author G. Willow Wilson.
“We had a big blueprint of what we wanted to do. We knew we wanted to have a Muslim-American character, we knew we wanted it to be her own solo series,” says the editor. “Once Willow and I had defined what we wanted the message to be, about identity and the flip of the Peter Parker paradigm in that saying with great power comes great opportunity, and Kamala deciding who she was going to be when she had an opportunity to be anyone, we had a very strong idea of concept.”
