Hanan al-Hroub is a Palestinian teacher who grew up in a refugee camp in Bethlehem and was recently awarded a prestigious one million dollar teaching prize by the Prime Minster of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Ms. Hroub specializes in supporting children who have been traumatized by war and violence. Using her own background, she has developed a teaching technique that focuses on play as a learning tool. She is the author of “We Play and Learn,” and has lectured in various conferences, and teacher training seminars.
“I am proud to be a Palestinian female teacher standing on this stage,” said a beaming Hroub as she accepted the award. “I accept this as a win for all teachers in general and Palestinian teachers in particular.”
