Fine dining is probably the last thing you think about when Libya comes to mind but that’s exactly why Abdelmuttaleb Twigiri wanted to open up a restaurant in the capital city of Tripoli. He recently opened up Toucan with “stunning views” of the Mediterranean. NPR says this of the fine dining experience: “Diners are surrounded by greenery and look out at date palms planted to replace a wall built by Gadhafi’s sons to block access to the beach. The menu offers a mix of Italian and Lebanese dishes.”
Mr. Twigiri says that given all the recent political and economic turmoil since dictator Moammar Gadhafi was toppled in 2011, “People [still] want to go out. They want to dress up, they need to live.”
