Photographer Rania Matar new series “L’Enfant-Femme” contrasts the rite-of-passage between girls in America (specifically Boston, where the artist lives) and the Middle East (mainly Lebanon, where the artist was born).
“These are the same transitions, here [in the US], or there,” says Ms. Matar. “There’s a universality to how they deal with it. For me, I’m the same whether I’m Lebanese or American. We create barriers, but this series is [a way] to break those down.”she captures is that the transition is a relatively universal experience.”
The photographer’s work is currently on display at the exhibit “She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and The Arab World” at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC.
