Last year, Indonesian designer Anniesa Hasibuan made history at New York Fashion Week when all her runway models wore the hijab. This year, the designer didn’t disappoint as she took her commitment to inclusivity even further by featuring models who are immigrants, visa/green card holders, or first-and-second-generation Americans.
Ms. Hasibuan says that casting these models was a “statement on the current administration’s stance on immigration in the U.S.” and her way of celebrating “the diversity of the American people and the story of the American dream unfolding on the runway.”
Haute Hijab, a modest fashion clothing line, praised the show on social-media, posting: “Thank you for showing the world that hijab does not prevent Muslim women from being beautiful, and that we are an integral, thriving and active part of this society. Needed this now more than ever.”
