Scholars around the Muslim world were alarmed by news of Turkey’s plans for a new combination of the Prophet Muhammad’s sayings that might scrap sayings thought to be out of date. Yet what makes this set of sayings different is that it explains them from the perspective of today’s Turkey, whose mix of secular and Muslim has created an interesting parallel. Some conservative scholars are calling the effort heretical.
