The favorite for this Thursday’s mayoral election in London is the son of a London bus driver who grew up with seven siblings in public housing and attended state schools. Oh, and he also happens to be Muslim. Sadiq Khan, 45, is a lawmaker and former transport minister for the Labour Party, and, if elected, would be the first Muslim to lead the city where one in eight residents are Muslim.
According to the New York Times, Mr. Khan’s platform is that he plans to fight extremism and identifies with various groups of people. “I’m a Londoner, I’m European, I’m British, I’m English, I’m of Islamic faith, of Asian origin, of Pakistani heritage, a dad, a husband,” he said during a recent interview.
