The British Library has acquired a historic Qur’an, dated to the 1820s, from Sumatra. When Marco Polo visited there in 1290, this 2000 mile-long island was part of a powerful Muslim trading network that stretched to Cairo. Today, it is part of Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population.
