Last month, Islam In Spanish opened in Houston — which is described as “a spacious, state-of-the-art Islamic community center.” Nahela Morales says she has moved to different parts of the country seeking a Spanish-speaking Muslim community, “This is a dream come true. Never did I think I would see this happen.”
The center showcases different sections – a mosque, an “Andalusian” museum, an information showroom, a lounge and a modern multimedia studio. Mujahed (Jaimie) Fletcher is the founder and chief executive of IslamInSpanish, and says that the center grew out of a decades long effort to educate his own Colombian family about Islam.
“What these activists have put together in Houston is exponentially more impressive than anything Latino Muslims have ever had before, “ says Imam Ramon Omar Abduraheem Ocasio, known as a pioneer in the Latino Muslim community “Beyond the stunning physical structure, the most impressive thing is the high calibre of Latino activists that have converged here – educated, resourceful, dedicated.”
