Muslim and Jewish music lovers came together last week in New York for the concert “Qawwali and the Spiritual Alchemy of Music” which featured Farid Ayaz and The Abu Muhammad Qawwals, a world-renowned Pakistani ensemble, and Basya Schechter, a celebrated Jewish folk-singer. The event illustrated the role music plays in both faiths which can be seen from the adhan (the Muslim call to prayer) to the Torah reading. Religious music also plays a pivotal role in both Islamic and Jewish births, weddings and funerals.
