New York Times’ “Frugal Traveler” takes a trip to Indonesia, land of 17,000 “or so” islands.
Not only is Indonesia the most populous Muslim-majority country in the world, but it is also the fourth-most-populous country (at over 255 million people) on the planet.
Frugal Traveler visited such diverse regions as Sumatra (sixth largest island in the world), Sulawesi (another one of Indonesia’s largest islands), spiritual Bali, and Papua (which occupies most of the Indonesian half of New Guinea).
As the Frugal Traveler reflected in his essay, “Perhaps it’s not surprising that each stop ended up involving religion and ritual, which are a rich part of life almost everywhere on the islands.”
