Mountains have literally been moved — okay leveled. Construction on skyscraper buildings, hotels, fast food joints, and a new metro/bus system are all underway for a controversial overhaul of Mecca. Many, like the mayor, say that historical structures have not been touched and that the modernization is needed to accommodate the more than 15 million people who visit each year, including the 2 million during Hajj pilgrimage. But still, many people are upset, concerned that the historical and religious heritage of the city are at stake. NPR takes a look at the issue —
