Last week an estimated 60,000 people attended the Middle East Film & Comic Con (or MEFCC) in Dubai which welcomed comic-book and sci-fi fanatics. The convention is in its fifth year but what made this year especially special was that UAE is a pivotal location for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” where Abu Dhabi’s sand dunes double for the desert planet Jakku.
“The journey we’ve taken is incredible in the five years since this began, but it’s all down to the fans and the enthusiasm,” says Ben Caddy, Chief Executive of Alliance, the event’s promoter. Screenwriter and director Max Landis talked about the uniqueness of the locale, “…you see girls in hijab with Darth Vader masks. That’s moving.”
