Mic reports that Ilhan Omar has won the Democratic vote for Minnesota state legislature, and is well on her way with becoming the first Somali-American Muslim female legislator in America – that is, if she wins the election in November.
Ms. Omar is a Somali activist who currently serves as Director of Policy Initiatives at the Women Organizing Women. She won the Democratic primary for Minnesota state legislature with 40.95% of the vote, beating out a politician who has held the seat for 22 terms. District 60B, where Omar lives and will be serving, is home to the University of Minnesota as well as neighborhoods with large populations of Somali and East African immigrants.
