Last Sunday’s shooting in Garland, Texas once again put the Muslim-American community unfortunately on the defense. There are an estimated 200,000 Muslims now living in the Dallas area, and according to the New York Times, they’ve worked hard to “find their footing in the conservative Christian culture of the Texas suburbs.”
Alia Salem, the local Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, has acknowledged having to walk a fine line in light of the attacks but questions: “When does free speech become hate speech? Free speech is not the same as responsible speech.”
