Nadeem Mazen, 34, is a two-term Cambridge, Massachusetts city councilor who recently announced his plans to run for congress, seeking the office of retiring Congresswoman Niki Tsongas who represents Massachusetts’ 3rd Congressional District. If Mr. Mazen wins, it would make him the third Muslim in Congress, after U.S. Representatives Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Andre Carson of Indiana.
The move from municipal office to Congress is in the spirit of the political activist group Mr. Mazen helped launch earlier this year. Jetpac encourages and supports Muslims who are running for office. “People don’t understand what it means to me to have a Muslim faith and to believe that faith compels me to serve every American and to serve the Constitution,” said Mr. Mazen.
