Continuing a tradition that started with President Clinton, President Obama hosted an Iftar dinner on Monday. An iftar is the evening feast in which Muslims break their fast during Ramadan.
The president recognized several Muslims for their achievements including: Samantha Elauf who went all the way to the Supreme Court to defend her right to wear the hijab at work, Zaid Ahmed who at sixteen founded the website Redefy which challenges stereotypes and Wai Wai Nu, a human rights activist for the Rohingya Muslims.
As the President said during the event, “Our Iftar is also a reminder of the freedoms that bind us together as Americans, including the freedom of religion — that inviolable right to practice our faiths freely.”
