In the Palestinian territory of Ramallah, Tahrir Hamad is being hailed as the first and (so far) only female appointed as a “mazouna” – a Muslim official who officiates marriages and divorces. Ms. Hamad is an Islamic scholar and has a master degree in Islamic law. Speaking on her new post, she makes the important point that “there is no religious or legal reason that prevents women from filling this post.”
