In Saudi Arabia’s restrictive environment, there are no movie theatres or concert venues as these forms of entertainment are forbidden. And yes, the young folk (which is the majority of the population) have found a loop-hole for their entertainment thrills – video games.
“The culture in general is very restrictive to what the rest of the world considers entertainment,” says tech whiz Abdullah Hamed. “The best way to have fun is to play games. They are cool, pretty and entertaining.”
NPR takes a look at Saudi gaming culture which is not all geared to men. Saudi women and girls are a growing demographic, and are also powerful characters in the games themselves.
