Texas Muslims have been organized and mobilized to help those in need suffering from the horror of Hurricane Harvey (see article).
M.J. Khan, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, says that four of ISGH’s mosques are now opened as round-the-clock shelters to anyone in need of refuge. He explains the issue for many victims has been that the roads are often not passable. Mr. Khan explained that “we have a pretty good networking and communication system” and have volunteers in place with bottled water, sleeping bags and supplies.
“This is an obligation, a religious obligation to help others,” Mr. Khan said. “When you give, you don’t give only to your own family. … You give to anybody who needs help.”
