During the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Sarah Attar competed in the 800-meters race, and though she placed last, still received a standing ovation. Female judo competitor Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkani also wasn’t a clear winner – at least not in her sport. What both women managed to do was make tremendous strides for women and their faith as they wore the hijab (religious head covering) during competition, and were the first females to represent their home country– Saudi Arabia.
