“Jin” means “woman” in Kurdish which explains why the Jin News Agency (JINHA) is completely staffed by women, offering news coverage of Turkey, Iraq, and Syria in multiple languages from a unique female point-of-view. Founded in 2012, JINHA has offices in all the major cities in Turkey and features a staff of sixty.
“JINHA is the only [news] agency of its kind in Turkey, but in the world, too, we are different from our counterparts,” says Editor Dilan Karamanoglu. “Our reporting is focused on women, also because we prefer female news sources in any field, from judicial issues to the health realm. The words of women carry more weight for us.”
Ms. Karamanoglu says that JINHA was first created “to showcase the unrecognized endeavors of women… Even when we cover ordinary events, we strive to highlight whatever is there in terms of female visibility. If a woman takes the floor during an ordinary press conference, for instance, we give precedence to what she says.”
