Ramadan is a time for piety, fasting, and for many Muslims, absorbing themselves in dramatic Turkish televisions shows. After the evening fast is broken, families gather around to watch popular shows like “Magnificent Century” which is set during the Ottoman Empire and is directed by brothers Durul and Yagmur Taylan (known as the Turkish Coen Brothers).
Turkey is the second largest exporter of serialized television shows after Hollywood. Iranian-American businesswoman Goli Ameri says the reason Turkish series are so popular throughout the Middle East is because “they show that you can be Muslim [and] at the same time modern.”
