Indonesian fashion blogger Puteri Hasannah Karunia is part of a growing movement in her country, known as “hijabers” – young Muslim fashionistas who follow modest/fashion-forward fashion, and who also proudly wear the hijab (headscarf).
With more than 180,000 followers on Instagram, Ms. Karunia has great reach to her peers, and talks about putting together a modest yet fashionable outfit, citing Indonesian fashion designer Itang Yunasz. “Itang Yunasz is not a Muslim designer,” comments Ms. Karunia. “But because the demand [for Muslim] fashion is so high Itang Yunasz [has] become a Muslim designer.”
To date, Islamic fashion is a $1.5 billion industry. Indonesia has big plans to build on that by becoming the global capital of Islamic fashion by 2020.
